Introduction

Preston upon the Weald Moors is a small village, situated to the north of Telford which is part of the borough of Telford and Wrekin in Shropshire.   The name Preston comes from the old English, meaning the priest’s village or town.   Weald means a heavily wooded area (or an upland or rolling land), the presence of which resulted in peat deposits below the surface.   The village is referenced in the Domesday Book.

Preston is situated on the edge of the East Shropshire Weald Moors and comprises marshland, the drainage of which was financed by wealthy land owners.   As a result, the fields are being used now mainly for grazing and occasional crop growing.
