St. Lawrence Church of England Primary School

In 2019, Ofsted gave the school a full inspection and reported it as “Good”.    It is a successful, welcoming and happy place for children to learn.   The school is fully subscribed and most of the attending children come from out of the area.   In the 1980s, however, it had been threatened with closure, as it had only 29 pupils.

St. Lawrence School is Federated with Tibberton – another village school.

Originally, there was a small school in the corner of the churchyard, adjacent to Hariley House, which can be seen on an 1881 map of the village.

The present school was built on land donated by the Trust Homes Estate in around 1898.   Various extensions have been carried out over the years, in addition to two demountable classrooms.

The photograph above shows the school with one demountable classroom and a cycle shed.    It shows that next to the school, Sharona Cottage was originally two cottages, finished in brick, not rendered, and each with their own front door.    The pond behind the school appears to have belonged to Preston Hall and was filled in later.   Subsequently, High Trees bungalow was built close to it.
